It would seem that Google is trying to mimic Apple’s success in the App Store. By releasing a similar style solution, Google is hoping to attract developers in building addons to it’s line of applications. This could be a viable business, but what attracts user’s to Google’s apps is it’s price: FREE.
Here is Google’s description on the marketplace:
The Google Apps Marketplace offers products and services designed for Google users, including installable apps that integrate directly with Google Apps. Installable apps are easy to use because they include single sign-on, Google’s universal navigation, and some even include features that integrate with your domain’s data.

Google has decided to end its Gears project. Google Gears allows web developers to store information off-line through browser plugins.

In January we shipped a new version of Google Chrome that natively supports a Database API similar to the Gears database API, workers (both local and shared, equivalent to workers and cross-origin wokers in Gears), and also new APIs like Local Storage and Web Sockets. Other facets of Gears, such as the LocalServer API and Geolocation, are also represented by similar APIs in new standards and will be included in Google Chrome shortly.
